BETACAINE
This product is comprised of Lidocaine 5% and non-medicinal ingredients as follows: carbopol 940, water, isopropyl alcohol, polysorbate 80, and white petrolatum. It is formulated as a gel.
This product functions well to prepare skin for minor pain associated with such procedures as laser hair removal or intense pulsed light. One of the advantages of this product is rapid onset of action compared to the industry leader, EMLA. For example, the Betacaine requires approximately ½ hour for action while the EMLA might require 1 – 2 hours. This has been verified by study. However, the studies also suggest that EMLA might ultimately have superior depth of analgesia. Therefore, it is left to the patient to select the priority when choosing topical anesthesia.
PRECAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS
Of course, this product is contra-indicated if the patient suffers allergy or sensitivity to Lidocaine, or any of the non-medicinal ingredients. If there is any doubt, then don’t! It is always best to avoid drugs in pregnancy and lactation, especially for elective applications such as pre-treatment for a cosmetic procedure. It is always to be used externally, and not internally in ear canals, nostrils, mouth or genital membranes. If there is inadvertent contact with the eyes, then immediately rinse well with water. If ever there are symptoms of discomfort, or itching, or rash associated with application of this product, then wash and discontinue. It might represent an allergy. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use over large body surfaces such as full back or full legs. It is best to select the sites of anticipated greatest sensitivity, such as sites of greatest hair density, or greatest color target in the case of IPL.
APPLICATION
Wash skin thoroughly. Apply a moderate amount of gel to the affected area 20 – 30 minutes prior to the procedure. Do not rub the gel in, and do not occlude. This may be used on adolescents. If preparing for treatment to the bikini, then avoid application to the genitals until just prior to the procedure. If you have questions about application of this product, then feel free to contact one of the nurse-technicians at Nirvana.
