Thermage - Skin Tightening

Each time treatment is delivered you will experience a brief intense heating sensation as the collagen in the deep layers of your skin is tightened. To protect your skin and to make the treatment more comfortable, a cooling spray is delivered before, during, and after each application of the treatment tip. An anesthetic cream applied one hour before the procedure numbs the surface of the skin to help make the treatment more bearable. Your physician may offer additional measures to increase your comfort.

You may return to your normal activities immediately, as there is usually no “downtime”. Minimal redness is seen in some patients but it usually disappears shortly after treatment. Heat-related complications can occur but are uncommon. There is no special care needed after treatment. As a part of good skin care, sunscreen is recommended.

In most patients, results appear gradually over 2-6 months, although some patients see an earlier response. A single treatment has produced good results in a significant number of patients. However, your doctor will assess the number and frequency of treatments required to achieve optimal results for your skin. Recently published studies show that improvements continue for at least six months after a single treatment session. Other studies show that thermal collagen changes can last several years, depending on the rate of the aging process. Thermage has been in existence since 2000. Studies show that those who were treated at that time have shown consistent results with no deterioration since then. So, we know that Thermage lasts at least this long. It is projected that the benefits from Thermage may last as long as 5-10 years, but there is no way of knowing this yet.

The Thermage procedure is very safe. Although it is possible that skin damage can occur, this advanced treatment has been studied carefully in hundreds of patients with minimal reports of lasting adverse effects. You will likely experience some redness and swelling after the procedure. Redness may last 1-2 hours, but occasionally lasts for a few days. Swelling is usually mild to moderate, but lasts longer – usually about 3-7 days. Very mild swelling may persist longer.

Dr. Genesis offers advice to the Thermage consumer.  Research has revealed that the pulse count is a strong predictor of successful outcome with this procedure. Failure to deliver an adequate number of pulses to the treatment area likely will result in treatment failure or non-response. A discount is not a bargain when there is a non-response due to a paucity of pulses.
