  • Even one decade ago, tattoo removal by laser took more than 15 sessions
  • The procedure is generally quick, but a large tattoo may extend on beyond the usual 15 minutes.
  • The cost is per unit time, with 15 minutes the minimum, and anything more than 15 minutes being pro-rated.
  • The treatment is completed using two lasers, the first to shatter the ink fragments in the skin, and the second to stimulate skin turnover.
  • The first laser is a “designated” Laser Tattoo Removal device, a high end precision instrument from Germany.  It is a Q-switched Ruby that makes a sharp ping as the laser impacts and shatters the ink particles, especially the dark ones.  Creams and reds are not quite as susceptible to this “Sinon Wavelight” laser, but they do lighten considerably, especially with the second pass laser.  In the end, after the outlines, if there is residual red or cream, it is usually not noticed.
  • The second laser pass occurs immediately after the first with the Profractional Erbium Yag passing over top, leaving deep but tiny columns in the skin that function to promote skin turnover in the next days.  The benefit of the second pass laser is multiple and includes: a) decreased risk of scar formation; b) increased rate of healing; c) increased rate of removal of the target ink.
  • Both lasers are considered in your treatment time as one session.  The second pass laser is well worth it, not only from an economical standpoint for the extra few minutes, but also from the point of view of good safe healing.

  • Once appropriate settings are selected, the patient may proceed with treatment by a trained technician.  Always the MD is available for further consultation.
  • The wound is dressed and the patient is sent home with a post-treatment outline.
  • Follow up is usually 4 to 6 weeks later, allowing the skin to adequately heal.
  • Complications such as scar formation are very rare, and early presentation back to the MD will prompt action that usually reverses any scar formation.
